SINGAPORE'S VINTAGE EATING PLACES: MARINERS' CORNER @ CLEMENTI WAY

Hands up, who loves eating Hainanese Western food? Establishments which serve up this curious cuisine abound in Singapore, thanks to Hainanese chefs serving their British colonial bosses meals from years past. One of the finest Hainanese Western restaurants is Mariners' Corner. Founded by the Say brothers, Raymond and Bermuda, their original restaurant opened in 1984 at Maritime House on Cantonment Road. This establishment served international seamen who lodged at their budget digs upstairs as well as many local patrons.

Moving to its current location on Block 106 Clementi Street 12 (entrance along Clementi Way) with Maritime House making way for redevelopment, Mariner's Corner maintains its high standards matched with modest prices. You won't break an arm or leg by eating here. Also eye-catching is its retro 1970s and 80s decor, which relives the cosy and informal atmosphere of its original location, revealing also reveal the owners' sense of humour and love for nostalgia.

More importantly are the meals, which are tastier and more substantial than their better-known rival chain-restaurants. Mariner's Corner used to have a sister restaurant, Vines at Novena, but that has since closed. So its only Mariner's Corner that remains today, and a recent meal showed why we will be returning again.

The rib eye steak is a piece de resistance.

The sirloin steak is no slouch either.

A none-too-shabby chicken chop.
A sinful seafood in cheese sauce (below).

Shaded outdoor dining is also available.

Did we say that the owners
were also football fans?

A love for retro memorabilia.
