This is the nearest food centre to our home. This is Empress Market, also known as Farrer Road Food Centre. However, it is to our regret that we don't go there often enough. It's always packed to the brim on weekend lunchtime and queues can be quite long. A number of old favourite stalls have closed down, the elderly culinary masters have either retired or gone on to the celestial makansutra. There have also been mishaps here where stallholders collapsed or got caught in an explosion.
Nonetheless, there is still lots of variety and good choices. Our favourite Hong Kong duck noodle is still around, as is some tasty Western choices and economic nasi lemak. The problem with hawker stalls these days is the high turnover. Often after establishing a favourite, these stalls either disappear or move on somewhere else. Which is why we should treasure our favourite food people, and let them know they matter and are being appreciated.
A long-time favourite of ours, Cantonese styled noodles by the Chan family.
Chicken noodle, still $4. Wanton soup, also $4.
This is what you call a work-station.
My favourite chicken cutlet in black pepper sauce, with coleslaw instead of fries. Just $6.50!
Zhajiang mian (minced meat noodle) and guotie (meat dumplings).
Another favourite Western joint, run by a hardworking Chinese immigrant couple and opens in the evening!
My favourite chicken chop in black pepper sauce and pasta + salad. Only $7.50!
Teh halia (ginger milk tea) & teh tarik (pulled milk tea).
Bon appetit!
Fairy lights come out in the evening in time to mark the Lunar New Year.
