SUKA MAKAN: SUN CAFE @ SUNWAY HOTEL, PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA

We do not normally dine in our hotel's restaurant, simply because the idea is boring and seemingly unadventurous. On this occasion, the day had been long and the weather was drizzly, so we stayed in to have dinner at Sun Cafe, on the ground floor of our Sunway Hotel. It was deserted and we were the only guests to be seen.

The staff dutifully took our orders, and the kitchen started to warm up. Looking at the menu, we decided to have our first true Cambodian meal. Dishes are usually served with rice, and we enjoyed Amok Trey (a steamed fish curry dish served in banana leaves) and Beef Lok Lak (marinated beef cubes with black pepper sauce. Both were enjoyable, as was the vegetable dish - okra (lady's fingers) and mushrooms.

The very nice meal had two effects - first to fill our stomachs and second, pepped us up enough to go for an evening walk around Wat Phnom all the way to Sisowat Quay and the Night Market. You see, good food stimulates one like no other.

We also had breakfast on one of the mornings at Sun Cafe. The international breakfast spread was substantial with a wide choice of dishes to choose from, including the omelette station, noodle station and porridge station, South Asian and Continental fare. No complaints for USD 10 per person, before we made our visit to the Royal Palace.
