Imagine the surprise of hearing panpipes and flutes while having lunch at Bukit Timah Plaza. Our ears were not deceiving us, for this was no ordinary run-of-the-mill Christmas do with boring commercial Xmas jingles played to death, but a real live band. SISAY comes from Ecuador and specialises in Ecuadorian and Andean music, performing on guitars, flutes, panpipes and cajon. What an honour it is to have the five-member ensemble - comprising Luis, Antonio, Umberto, Jaime and Inti - performing in of all places, Bukit Timah Plaza.
Formed in the 1980s by the parents of the current band, Sisay has become the voice of Ecuador in Asia, serving as its cultural ambassador to many countries. They have been to Singapore on numerous occasions, usually performing at Esplanade's Outdoor Stage and other concerts. This year, Sisay has a couple of Christmas lunchtime and dinnertime concerts at Jayleen 1918 Hotel, 42 Carpenter Street.
Their music includes South American favourites, and on this occasion Beethoven's Ode To Joy sung in Spanish, Christmas staples - Feliz Navidad and We Wish You A Merry Christmas. Whatever they sing or perform, it is the raw energy and passion which truly moves, and the audience and onlookers in attendance could not be struck by their liveliness and verve. Feliz Navidad, indeed.
