Love chicken rice done the old fashioned way? Choon Hoy Parlor is a newish restaurant located at the Capitol that prides itself being a Singapore fusion restaurant. Relocating from old premises at Beach Road, it has received a new lease of life with a chic atmosphere combined with a neo-retro look that bring back memories of the 1960s and 70s.

Its latest speciality is Hainanese chicken rice steamboat, which you get to cook the chicken and a variety of dishes on your table-top. It is a tribute to the old Yet Con chicken rice restaurant at Purvis Street which has sadly closed down after serving customers since the 1940s. We've never been to Yet Con, so we've got to trust older tastebuds to make sure this isn't the biggest con yet. Our guests this afternoon (in October 2025) were the Tans, who could vouch this was as close to the real thing as possible.
The dishes are served with an extremely fragrant bowl of chicken rice and an array of sauces which made this a memorable lunch all around. The cheng tng dessert was the perfect solution to wash all the delicious food down. This was recently reported in the pages of The Straits Times, so I thought it timely to feature it as well.
