NOT SO RANDOM HEARTLAND EATS: EIGHT A.M. COFFEESHOP / ZHENG WANG FAMILY RESTAURANT

There is only one food court in all of Bukit Timah Plaza. Formerly known as Zheng Wang Family Restaurant, it used to have the usual HDB coffeeshop fare, including yong tau foo, zhichar, economy rice, chicken and duck rice, and the works. After an extensive renovation, it has taken on a more gentrified and atas feel, calling itself eight a.m. Coffeeshop. It also has an upmarket sandwich stall called Hun Bun.

Those are prices of artisanal sandwiches
in Singapore dollars, not Malaysian ringgits.
No, I'll be making my own sandwiches for now.

The most important thing is the name Zheng Wang still exists, as a stall that sells chicken rice, duck rice, roast meats and noodles. It's the major reason why this food court is packed full during lunch hours. The service is fast and excellent, with the Hainanese family running it always ready to please. This is the major reason why we still regularly come here, not for the atas fare, but the heartlands goodies. Long may this continue.

Good ol' Hainanese chicken rice.

Braised Duck hor fun
