FIFA WORLD CUP 2010: Third Place Match (10 July 2010)

Third Place Match:
GERMANY 3 - URUGUAY 2
A replay of the 1970 Third Place Match, with pretty much the same winners. With little besides pride to play for, it was a free flowing match and caution was thrown out of the window. Mistakes were made and these made for a high scoring match (as with previous Third Place Matches). The otherwise reliable Uruguayan keeper Muslera was culpable for all three German goals. The 1st: spilling a Schweinsteiger stinger and allowing Thomas Mueller to slot home, the 2nd: flapping at a cross for Marcell Jansen to head home, the 3rd: for allowing another cross to pinball across his goalmouth before Sami Khedira's headed winner. A Schweinsteiger slip let in the first Uruguayan goal, while Forlan scored a second from an opportunistic volley. Entertaining all round. Mueller and Forlan are still in the hunt for the Golden Boot with 5 goals apiece. Mueller is almost a certainty for Young Player of the Competition as well. Let's see what 2014 can bring for the rejuvenated Germany. Rating: 4/5
