LEONG YOON PIN (1931-2011) / Singapore's Pioneer Composer

We remember with sadness but fondness the life of Mr LEONG YOON PIN (1931-2011), the "Father of Singaporean Composers and Music". He left this world yesterday at the age of 79, with a great legacy of composition, education, performance and musical activism behind him. Below is the Straits Times article by Akshita Nanda about Singaporean's pioneering composer and musical giant.

An online tribute to Mr Leong by Singapore's musical community will appear later on these pages, but please feel free to express your mind and thoughts on how his personality and music has touched your lives in the comments column.

I will always remember Mr Leong YP fondly, for giving me the gift of music. He taught me piano from 1982 to 1984 while I was at the Institute of Education, without accepting any form of tuition payment and later allowed me to join his music specialist class. He had contributed significantly to my career and dreams of being able to make and teach music. That was 27 years ago. Today a few friends called and emailed me the news of his demise, I feel very sad. I wish to visit his wake but I'm living in HK. His kindness and generosity will always be remembered.
