Breaking news. 17-year-old Singaporean pianist Toby Tan Kai Rong has been awarded the second prize at the prestigious Ettlingen International Piano Competition. This competition held in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany is in its 20th edition, and previous winners have included the likes of Lang Lang, Yuja Wang, Li Yundi, Lyu Tianyao, Boris Giltburg and Lise da la Salle.
At the baroque Asam-Hall of Schloss Ettlingen, Toby perform two rounds of repertoire, totally some 50 minutes, including works by J.S.Bach, Haydn, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Prokofiev and Babadjanian in Category B (for pianists born after 2003). Significantly, he is the first Singaporean pianist to be a finalist and prizewinner in this competition. He was also a winner in other youth piano competitions in Aarhus (Denmark), Zhuhai (China) and Hanoi (Vietnam).
He is presently studying with Albert Tiu at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory, and privately with Armen Babakhanian in Kuala Lumpur. His previous teachers include Winnie Tay, Rena Phua, Rosemery Halim and Poom Prommachart. After the final prizewinners' gala concert at Ettlingen, Toby returns to Singapore to serve his national service.
