SCENES OF PHNOM PENH LIFE / PART I

Yeah Penh Square, just south of Wat Phnom,
with Exchange Square & Vattanac Tower in view.

It's been 18 years since we last visited Cambodia. Phnom Penh in 2008 was a low-rise bustling third world city, with nary a skyscraper in sight. Today, it looks like a modern metropolis, with a skyline that looks like Bangkok at certain angles. The old and spanking new come into collision like no other city we've visited. There are modern integrated resorts, old French colonial-era buildings, swanky restaurants and ubiquitous street food.

Singha and Naga, sacred symbols
along Norodom Boulevard.
The tree-lined Preah Ang Duong St (No.110)

Here are some photographs I took, a portrait of a city that has risen from the ashes of a genocide (1975-79) and refuses to be dismissed. A heady mix of fascinating contrasts.

Hardly anyone wears crash helmets here,
